Will the Coast Guard take you if you clean up your debt?

Deal Score0

My boyfriend is 26, very fit and intelligent. Excellent skills, and driven. Unfortunately he had a few problems with his credit growing up. He’s about 4500 in debt, but is in the process of contacting the companies and trying to clean it up. Due to his age and credit, will that automatically make him not elligable to join? It’s something he has wanted to do for a long, long time. Any chance id he scores well on the test he’d be able to make it?

If he’s only 4500$ in debt, there shouldn’t be much of an issue with him joining now, although it would be a good idea to set everything up to be paid off automatically while in boot camp, or use a power of attorney to allow bills to be paid out of his account. The biggest concerns with debt for the military are jobs that require security clearances. Debt can hold up the process of getting a clearance, but generally small amounts of debt won’t keep some one out of the military.
