Ho do you do a credit report audit?
While researching various credit repair companies, some claim to do a credit report audit as part of their service. I have also read that I credit report audit can be one of the most powerful ways to repair bad credit. I think I have a basic understanding of what a credit report audit is, but I am not sure exactly how I would go about doing one myself. Can anyone explain how to do a credit report audit (including any laws that it would fall under), or even better be able to point me to resources that would explain credit report audits?
I don’t think I was clear. I do not plan to hire a credit repair company. I am also fairly certain I know how to dispute an item on my credit report with the credit bureau. What I am asking about is how to do a credit report audit. My understanding is that for a credit report audit, in addtion to disputing with the credit bureaus, you require the creditor to directly verify validity of the existance of a debt by requiring the creditor to submit certain documents. I understand this is particularly successful for collections and charge-offs. However, I do not know how to go about doing this. What law or laws (if any) does it fall under? How should the letter be written and what should be asked of the creditor? What documentation should the creditor be asked to supply? I would be interested in hearing from anyone who knows the answer to these questions or knows of any good sources that has answers.
