criagslist auto sale scams?

Deal Score0

I am looking to buy a used vehicle and was prompted by friends to look at craigslist. I think it is to good to be true. This is one of the responses I got (I removed the seller’s name):

Seller to me

Hello there,

The car is still available.2006 Nissan Maxima SE 3.5L V6 – Mileage : 48.350,Black/Black, Transmission:Automatic,Leather Seats, Power Seats,Heated Seats,Bucket Seats, Memory Seats,Automatic Climate Control,Xenon Headlights,Navigation System,Power Windows,Passenger Airbag, Side Airbag,Power Steering,Power Locks,Sun Roof,Handsfree Wireless,Keyless Entry,CD Changer,Total Number Of Speakers: 8,Air Conditioning. The vehicle has been well taken care of, always kept in the garage. Flawless exterior/interior condition, no scratches, no dents, accident-free, full service history, no outstanding finance. The car is paid off and has a clear title.

I am a Sergeant in the US army and my battalion has been transferred to United Kingdom for a 11 months experience change program. The vehicle is located in Helena, MT and my wife will be taking care of the shipping and it will be delivered within 3-5 days, depending on your location. Also i can ship you the vehicle for free anywhere in USA.This is our second family car and must be sold in order to pay the house mortgage and my daughter college fees. The time is short and that’s the only reason I dropped the price on the car.

My last price is $ 2.850, shipping included, and all the documents will be provided along with it.We will use eBay to secure our deal because it protects both buyer and seller. You send the money to eBay and they hold the payment until the vehicle arrives. You have 7 days to inspect it and I get the money after you make sure everything is ok and decide to keep it. If you don’t like the vehicle and want to return it, I will pay the return shipping and you will be 100% refunded by ebay.

In order to move forward I will need your full name, address and phone number so i can register the deal at eBay.After that eBay will send you the payment instruction.

Thank you,

P.S. With no disrespect, please consider taking a loan before proceeding, if you don’t have the available funds for the vehicle. If you need more pictures, just let me know.

    It’s complete BS.

I’ve gotten a few very similar responses for apartment ads I replied to a few years ago except one was a guy in Africa and the other was in Denmark or something. Funny thing was, both of them said I couldn’t make an appointment to look INSIDE the place but that I could drive by and take a look from the outside. lol But I would get the keys sent to me after payment was received.

Don’t do it. It IS a scam.

This is a complete SCAM. There is no car for sale and if you send them any money it will disappear and so will this seller. Gone into Internet obscurity. eBay doesn’t even offer this type of escrow account service unless the sale is through the eBay auction system. And even then there is no buyer protection program for used car purchases. Go to eBay are read the SCAM warnings.

Please take just TWO minutes and READ THE WARNINGS ON CRAIGSLIST ABOUT SHIPPING CARS and doing business with long distance sellers.

This is a complete SCAM and they are fishing for a victim who doesn’t have the intelligence to check the background information.

    What do YOU think?

An 06 Maxima SE with those miles is about a $ 16-18K car at a legit dealer. Shipping costs around $ 1000. So you’re looking at $ 17-19,000 for a real, honest, legit deal on a Maxima.

But you think that Jarhead O’Toole will sell you his Max for under $ 3000, taking a $ 15,000 hit to get rid of the car. Really? REALLY?

Tell me you aren’t that dumb. I dare you.

Any money you send those crooks will be stolen from you. Send them $ 100 for the car and you will lose every cent. Stop being greedy, go find a nice Maxima at a local dealer and pay market price for it.

    It’s a VERY common scam

Ebay has NOTHING to do with cars unless they are listed for auction EXCLUSIVELY on Ebay, you win the auction, pay through Ebay with your linked Paypal account, and pick up the car in person. PERIOD

Ebay has NOTHING to do with anything listed on Craigslist

And if the car were in Helena MT, then why in the hell would he list it on your local Craigslist? Even if he wanted to sell in a hurry he could find any dealer in MT to pay $ 8000 for it

Then look at the warning on every single car page on Craigslist saying “OFFERS TO SHIP VEHICLES ARE 100% FRAUDULENT” and ask yourself why you are willing to ignore Craigslist’s own warning that can’t be any clearer. It doesn’t say 50% fraudulent or 75% fraudulent, the reason it says 100% is because they are ALL fraudulent.

Craigslist is a LOCAL marketplace for face to face transactions
