I’m a mortgage processor and am doing a loan for someone who owns the building and is the pastor. Do they own the church? Just wondering howit is legally set up?

I suppose they own just the building but the “church” is actually the congregation truthfully. It is all the people coming together to worship and have fellowship. Without them, the “church” building is just a building often with a funny high steeple on it. They just own the property and also pastor.
Churches are businesses, like any other business. Its no different from a bartender owning his bar, or a rancher owning his ranch.
If he is a sole propreitorship, there is no problem with this. If he has filed as a corporation, there could be some legal hang ups, and the tax paperwork could be tricky to file.
Depnds on the religion. The Catholic and Mormon religions own most of their buildings. Others rent theirs. A pastor can own a Baptist church.
